exercise???

Postby wrigs10 » Mon Sep 05, 2011 11:22 am

Hey guys Im new here and am just looking for some advice on some problems iv been having recently.
I have mild CP that affects my left leg making me appear to have a limp. For the past month or so iv started jogging. However, recently iv found that my limp seems to be getting worse and im consciously try to make sure i put my heel down, whereas before i started running this was never really a problem and people rarely noticed my limp. Does anybody know whether exercise can be problematic for CP? I was under the impression running is supposed to help. Thanks guys :)

I would be careful exercising with CP. With my form of it (high muscle tone in upper body and limbs), once I exercise, my muscles get tigthter and cause me more trouble, although I really like the feeling of strength and energy. I think that the best approach is to do it moderately: once I notice things get worse, I take a break. For example, I am prescribed two sets of exercise a day. Instead I do just 2-3 a week, otherwise my upper body gets crazy. Finding nice neurologyst or rehab doctor to consult might be nice idea too, although you are your best doctor with CP.

Exercising with cerebral palsy is not only good for the patient but in most cases it is absolutely essential for the well-being of the patient and for loosening the muscles which can be very constricted at times. The exercises must be adapted to the particular patient's needs but general movement is agreeable as well. Playing outdoors, swimming, aerobic exercise, weight resistance training, all are acceptable forms of exercise for people suffering from cerebral palsy.
