Postby Mum2008 » Wed Oct 15, 2008 7:22 am

My son is now 2 and a half years, he has cp athetiods
He goes twice a week to a brillaint place called Conductive Education and he goes to Play group once a week and he receives therapy at home as well, like rolling with support and uses a standing frame and a special seating. I'm trying so hard to help my son become independant he is so clever but the problem is his speech he doesnt talk yet but you can tell he wants to talk to you whenever you read a book or play with him.

oh yeah and he just started acupunture treatments we'll see how that goes.

is there any other advice or therapy that I should try??
plz dont hesitate to reply
thanks

My brother has cp, and hes living a full life. I'm glad you are trying your best to help him become independent. I wish i had the advice you are looking for.
I think one of the most important things you need to do is find a psychologist. he should see one regularly as he gets older. This was vital for his success.
And yes, my brother has grown up to be fully capable. I wish you and yours the best.

CP and speech

Postby kbogle » Wed Jun 24, 2009 2:22 pm

My son is now 18 years old. When he was 18 months old, we were told he had no hope of speech and to start teaching signs. I looked at the neurologist in disbelief and reminded her that his hands were tight fists. She suggested he be taught some type of sign for when he as hungry, etc., just the basics. I was devastated at the thought of him not being able to communicate with anyone but us and then only for the "basics."

I went to his early intervention school the next day and told them what the doctor had said. They immediately made arrangements for him to use an augmentative communication device. It was electronic and could be programmed. We recorded his big brother saying certain statements in it and put pictures on the board. It took him no time to figure out that if he hit the right button, he got what he wanted. They were simple things like, "Can I have a turn?", "May I have a drink please?".

Within 6 months, he as able to say those same phrases himself. In less than a year, we gave back the device because he was saying more then it could be programmed for.

Don't give up hope! Try augmentative communication if you can.
