CP and starting a family

I decided to create this new form as I am now a parent with Cerebral Palsy and had a child in Nov. of 2012. I would like to have other parents who have Cerebral Palsy and are raising a child or children share their experiences here.

CP and starting a family

Postby kc1202 » Sun Jun 08, 2014 6:57 am

Hi,
My name is Kevin and my wife Caroline and I both have cerebral palsy. We are in our early thirties and are considering starting a family, however have been unable to gather much information about the challenges we might face as a couple struggling with a disability. Caroline uses crutches to walk and I have some weakness in my legs although I am able to walk well.
We have a number of questions as we approach the possibility of having a child:
1) Can we connect with anyone who has done this to discuss the challenges?
2) How should we go about finding the right medical care, before, during, and after pregnancy?
3) What are some of the stuggles that people with CP face in raising a child? How do they handle them? Are there good assistive devices available? I know I have not been specific about our requirements, but we are still learning about what we may need

Thanks for any help you can provide,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
This is Mike. I created and administer the board. Not sure if you had a chance to read about me. I am a father of a 20 month old daughter and I have CP. My wife does not so that does make things a bit easier on me. I walk with crutches but am able to walk around the house without them. It was a little difficult in the beginning when my daughter was unable to walk or crawl as my wife had to do most of the work when it came to transporting her but I was able to change diapers, give her a bath, etc. after my wife moved her to the appropriate area. How easy is it for you to carry things while walking? Would you feel comfortable enough carrying a newborn around?

Feel free to send me a message on the board and I will give you my personal email address. I would be more than happy to talk with you further.

Welcome to the new CP family forum. I created this blog so that families could share information about their family members with cerebral palsy in Delaware. I have learned so much from other families. I will start the forum with a question: Where do you go for information and resources on cerebral palsy for your family member?
