Regression in walking

Postby dgbene » Tue Jan 26, 2010 9:38 pm

We have a 3 and half year old that who has CP and eplepsy. He has been making great progress with his walking. He could take about ten steps before he was three and was walking almost all the time befor this December. Last month we noticed his balance and walking begin to deteriorate to the point where he was not walking at all. He also began to shake alot, couldn't do things like undress and his speaking even seemed to take a back slide. We met with his neuroligist and we're looking into the posiblity of other genetic problems like leukodystrophy. The first test have come back negative. He also seems to be starting to regain some of what he lost. This week I saw him stand, bend over and pick a toy. He can even walk again if someone holds his hand. Friends of ours who have a 5 year old girl with CP, say that her walking will suffer with some growth spurts, but nothing like they what our child is doing. My question is, has anyone had a problems like this? Is this kind of thing common with children with CP?

HI,
any child with CP will have kind of deterioration with function if he is in unfamiliar situation, stress, change of drugs, and of course growth spurts.
When this is happenning, try to calm his down and just more repetition of the same function in a proper way. Do not let them to do things in compensatory manner. This will gradually reduce the tone and lead to normalization.
