Stem Cell Therapy - Personal Experiences?

Postby HRAI » Tue Mar 31, 2009 3:23 pm

Hi there...this is my first post !

We have an adorable little boy that has CP. He's just over 2 years old. I'm seriously considering getting him some stem cell therapy in Germany as they have a stem cell center over there.

Has anyone on this forum had experience with Stem Cell therapy in children (good or bad experiences?)

Thanks kindly.

Hardeep.

Stem Cell Treatment Clinic in Germany

Postby Concerned Papaw » Sat Apr 04, 2009 7:32 pm

Hello,

Yes I have just learned of this clinic in Germany. I have a 5 year old grandson with CP.
My daughter found an article inCP Magazine about Stem Cell treatment.

I have a friend who has ALS. He asked his doctor if these types of clinics offer effective treatment. His doctor told him that if they did, results would be posted in many medical journals worldwide.
His doctor further told him that these stem cell groups offer false hope and charge thousands of dollars.

Has anyone out there had treatment in one of these type of clinics? Hope is all we have sometimes and would not want our hope to turn into false hope.

I hate to be the wet blanket here, but knowing how CP affects the body and how stem cells work; I just can't see how they would be beneficial.

I really think more research needs to be done in this area. Maybe one day.....

Personally I am hoping that stem cells are the "cure" for many many diseases and conditions, I think we just need to be patient.

We are back home from this. Sarah was in the hospital for a total of 6 hours over two days. It was non-invasive. As for the results, Sarah's left arm wasn't working very well (in utero stroke) and she's doing much more with it. Its not up to the level of her right arm, but its much better. Her hypertone has toned down (still hypertone but less than before) and she has more balance. To others, this might be small steps but to my husband and I they are great leaps. We are combining this with Therasuit intensive PT.

stem cells treatment

Postby natang » Sun Feb 21, 2010 11:05 am

I did saw children and adults after brain stem cells transplant (MS, CP, Stroke).
First of all: according to the research - you can see results within three to six months. Second - people who I personally see - as they came, the same way they came out. Thrid: it is invasive. Becasue it is done through the lumbar spine puncture (unless in German they do it different ). There is the same procedure going in Israel, I think Russia, and China.
I think this is really premature to state about this treatment, since it is in the stage of research. But... look at pro - and cons, and then make - up your decision.

We just finished a clinical trial study, approved by the National Institute of Health using the same idea that the X-Cell center in germany did. While our daughter (who has CP) saw very slight improvments in Germany, her cousin (who's 9 with CP) saw massive changes. She used to walk with a limp, which is almost gone (one month after the procedure). She had crossed-eyes (her parents had her go through two surgeries to correct with no success) and now they move together. So for her, it was AMAZING. My daughter also has a large section of her brain (about 1/3) that has atrophied from birth. I believe in this, but you must be realistic. What happened to one child (and the success) is not the same for the other, even if they both have CP. We can see on this board that many have CP (or children with CP) and each one is affected and functions differently.

Lumbar puncture is actually NON-INVASIVE. Its a needle, like an epidural. Except instead of pain medicine (like an epidural) its your body's own stem cells.

Duke University and the University of Georgia is doing the same study, except with cord blood stem cells and through an IV. When they are put in the blood stream, there are less stem cells that can cross the blood/brain barrier than through a lumbar puncture.

I have been communicating with sarahsmom through email and although we totally understand nothing may happen for our son we are willing to try. He doesn't loose anything and he may just gain something. We are currently saving up to go to Germany.

We discussed this with our own doctor who said he was totally for it and the worst thing that happens to Ben is Ben has a lot of pain from the procedure and his parents pay a lot of money and nothing happens. I am willing to take that risk for the small chance Ben gets to be a lucky one.

Stem Cell application for treatment of neurological pathology is highly risky and has unknown results for the time been.
Known side effects – risks of oncological pathology (in long-term perspective), in case of application via lumbar puncture there are high risks of acute paralysis.
It seems to me logical in case of CP or Down Syndrome first to try all available well recommended methods: physiotherapy (various methods with the use of qualified therapist) in combination with stimulation of central and peripheral nervous system by medicaments and amino acids.

Nowadays, treating incurable diseases is not a major issue; stem cell therapy has helped many patients getting treatment for incurable diseases of which Cerebral Palsy in one disease. Cerebral palsy is a disorder caused by damage to the brain during pregnancy, delivery or shortly after birth. It is often accompanied by seizures, hearing loss, difficulty speaking, blindness, lack of co-ordination and/or mental retardation. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for cerebral palsy and no standard therapy that works for all patients. Stem cell therapy is very useful for the whole organism.
Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are severe autoimmune diseases in which the pursued traditional anti-inflammatory therapy is symptomatic, and this disease often causes surgery and patient’s disability.
