"Wheelchair Monologue" is an interactive theater/performance piece designed to share elements of disability culture in an entertaining and enlightening way. Created by people with disabilities, the presentation utilizes real life stories, anecdotes, and statistics to educate, entertain, and provide insights into what it really means to be "disabled" in today's society. As the wheelchair is the universal sign for accessibility, all kinds of disability issues are reflected in the presentation, not just those of people who use wheelchairs. The multi-disciplinary presentation addresses assumptions, stereotypes, and social injustices that people with disabilities regularly encounter. Goals of the project include disability awareness for the general public and employment in the arts for people with disabilities.
Stories and anecdotes will be collected from individuals and reviewed by a committee. Criteria for inclusion of submitted material includes how well the story demonstrates or underscores a disability issue, the potential of the story to educate society, and how well the story translates into a skit or other means of presentation. A variety of disabilities and topics will be covered. Those who submit stories will have the opportunity to audition if they are interested in performing. Stories maybe submitted online or by "snail mail."
